Rod Gray

Painting is a vital language to me. It is how I make sense of this crazy and beautiful world. I’ve been painting and exhibiting consistently since graduating VCA in 1991. My painting is figurative neo- expressionistic romanticism. I work on diverse surfaces to explore the materiality and colours latent in found objects . I paint in oil on timber and linen supports, and I work in synthetic polymer paint/watercolours on paper. I explore dreams, memories and visions which I capture by drawing frequently. I also make found-object painted sculptural works which I call painted artefacts. With a heavy presence of fire in my research and artwork over the years I have found the last year’s tragic fires enormously galvanising which has resulted in many new paintings and painted artefacts.
