Suburban Sweet

Three bathrooms, two living spaces, five bedrooms and the ‘good room’…for over one
hundred years the detached house and garden has symbolised the good life for most
Australians. For many, the suburbs represent affordability, independence, space, privacy
and security. (Sadly, this was not shared by the first nations who were displaced in order to house Australia’s vast sprawl.)

Since firing up the first Backyard BBQ, our great suburban hinterland has undergone much change. Our suburbs are in a constant state of demographic flux. In fact, Australia is one of the most mobile societies in the world with 15% of the population changing their address within Australia in the year prior to the 2016 Census.

As artists and galleries abandon the inner city due to high rents they look towards the
suburbs with its broad mix of language, culture, religion and food. And with that exodus, there should be no surprise that our suburban spaces are now checkered with creative hubs and truly exciting places to be.
